REST promised more than JSON over HTTP, but most of our APIs stop at CRUD endpoints and let the front end hardcode what happens next. This talk revisits HATEOAS — hypermedia as the engine of application state — as a practical design pattern rather than an academic footnote. We’ll start with the concept and what it actually asks of your API, then look at a real implementation: a Personal Inflation Index application where the server models meaning and the client owns only presentation. Along the way we’ll dig into why decoupling your front end from the middle tier matters — how it keeps business truth in one place, and what goes wrong when three clients each compute the same number their own way.
